At St Mary and St Pancras CE Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum inspires, challenges and nurtures every child as an artist. From the Early Years onwards, pupils are encouraged to explore a wide range of materials, tools and techniques that spark curiosity and imagination. We want children to grow in confidence as creative thinkers and skilled makers, developing both technical ability and personal expression. Through exposure to diverse artists, styles and traditions from different cultures and times, pupils develop cultural literacy and an understanding of the role of art in society.

Our carefully sequenced curriculum builds knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6. Children revisit key artistic strands such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and digital media, allowing learning to deepen through practice and reflection. Sketchbooks play a central role in recording ideas, experimenting with techniques and refining work. Lessons balance hands-on making with discussion, analysis and appreciation of artwork, helping pupils to articulate their ideas using subject-specific vocabulary. Art is taught in immersive blocks and enriched through gallery visits, workshops, clubs and cross-curricular links.

Art at STMP is a subject where all children can succeed. Equity of access underpins our approach, ensuring disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND are fully supported to express themselves and develop their creative potential.
