We are looking forward to a busy and exciting Summer term as our Year 6 pupils complete their final weeks at primary school. This is an important and memorable time, with SATs, enrichment opportunities and preparations for the transition to secondary school, alongside a broad and engaging curriculum.

English
In English, pupils will explore Oliver Twist and Sherlock Holmes, using these texts to develop reading comprehension and writing skills. They will take part in debates, write diary entries and practise a range of genres, including playscripts, helping to build confidence in both written and spoken language.

Maths
This term in Maths, children will focus on SATs preparation and revision, consolidating their understanding of key concepts such as arithmetic, reasoning, fractions, decimals and the four operations. They will also explore statistics, shape and measure, and develop problem-solving skills through investigations and mathematical puzzles.

Science
In Science, our focus will be Evolution and Inheritance. Pupils will learn about variation, natural selection and how species adapt to their environments. They will study the work of Charles Darwin and explore how his ideas have shaped our scientific understanding. Children will also build on their knowledge of the circulatory system and consider how lifestyle choices can impact health.

Unit of Learning – Slave Trade in the British Empire
This term’s unit of learning focuses on the Slave Trade in the British Empire. Children will learn about the origins of the trade, including how Europeans enslaved people from West Africa and transported them across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. They will study the triangular trade, the experiences of enslaved people and the lasting impact of slavery, as well as how the slave trade was eventually abolished.

Religious Education (RE)
In RE, pupils will explore the question: How has the Christian message survived for over 2000 years? They will learn about the spread of Christianity, the role of the apostles, the importance of the Bible and how translation has helped the message endure. Children will also consider the challenges faced by early Christians, including persecution, and reflect on the significance of faith and belief over time.

Trips and Enrichment
Following SATs week, pupils will enjoy enrichment activities including a trip to Regent’s Park, as well as preparing for the Year 6 production and taking part in end-of-term celebrations. The class will visit the British Museum to take part in a Maths workshop in June and we are also teaming up with a team of chefs from The Savoy Hotel and the charity Adopt a Chef to enjoy some cooking opportunities!

Homework and Reading
Homework will focus on SATs revision, using the materials provided. We also expect children to read at home for at least 25 minutes daily and to discuss their reading regularly with an adult, supporting their comprehension and enjoyment of texts.
