In Reception, we have been developing our number sense by learning to subitise quantities up to three. Subitising means recognising how many objects are in a group without needing to count them individually.
We began our learning through Numberblocks, exploring different ways to represent numbers up to three. We then became number detectives, using our classroom environment to spot groups of three in everyday objects and arrangements.
Working both collaboratively and independently, we carefully observed different representations of three, shared what we noticed and explained how we knew there were three without counting. We discovered that three can look different depending on how objects are arranged, but the quantity remains the same!
Through practical exploration, mathematical talk and playful investigation, we are building strong foundations in number sense, developing our confidence in recognising quantities and explaining our mathematical thinking.
