This Spring term has already been full of curiosity, creativity and collaboration in Reception!
In Personal, Social and Emotional Development, we explored our feelings and celebrated our differences through the story Elmer, helping us understand that it is wonderful to be unique. We have been developing our resilience and independence across our learning.
In English, we are continuing to strengthen our reading and writing skills through daily phonics. The children are applying their phonics knowledge to decode words, read simple sentences and build fluency. We are placing a strong focus on automatic recognition of tricky words, helping the children to read more smoothly and confidently. Through our regular reading practice sessions, the children are becoming more independent readers, developing accuracy, expression and comprehension. We are also using our phonics to support our spelling when writing sentences. One of our favourite moments was discovering that a Naughty Bus had taken Miss Davies’ dinner! We worked collaboratively to inform the police, rescue the bus from the pond and even wrote letters suggesting how it could be a kinder bus.
In Mathematics, we have been developing our number sense by recognising numbers to 10, exploring number bonds to 5 and 10 and using part–whole models to support early addition and subtraction. We use practical resources such as our fingers, ten frames, counters and Numicon to deepen our understanding.
In Understanding the World, we explored transport, comparing old and new vehicles and discussing how transport has changed over time.
Additionally, in the second half of Spring term, we will be extending our learning even further. In Design and Technology, we will be making links to PSED by designing and creating our own worry creatures, learning simple sewing skills and thinking carefully about how to make something safe, strong and comforting.
In Science, we will be learning about animals and their habitats, exploring where different animals live and why those environments suit them. We will also be developing our understanding of maps and the wider world, building on our geographical skills. We are especially excited about our upcoming trip to London Zoo, where we will put our observation and knowledge skills into practice in a real-life setting.
In RE, as we approach Easter, we will be developing our understanding of Christianity by learning about Holy Week and why Easter is important to Christians.
It continues to be a busy and purposeful Spring term, and we are so proud of the confidence, independence and enthusiasm the children show each day.
