This week, Year 2 looked more deeply into the life of Edith Cavell and learned about some of the difficult realities of war. The children explored the final part of Edith’s life through drama, acting out a play and discussing the themes of conflict, courage and making difficult choices.
Edith Cavell was a nurse who cared for injured soldiers from all sides of the war. She believed that everyone deserved help and kindness, regardless of which army they belonged to. As well as nursing wounded soldiers, Edith secretly helped many soldiers escape and hid them from the German army. Because of her actions, she was arrested and later executed.
The children approached this sensitive topic with great maturity and thoughtfulness. They reflected on how unfair and cruel war can be and considered the importance of standing up for what is right, even when it is difficult. Year 2 recognised Edith Cavell as a brave and compassionate woman who followed her beliefs and helped others in their time of need.
