This week, Year 4 took part in an exciting experience with the National Literacy Trust’s Young Readers Programme — a session filled with learning, creativity, and a deeper connection to both reading and nature.

The Young Readers Programme, run by the Literacy Trust, is designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading by giving children access to books they love and opportunities to meet real-life authors and storytellers.

One of the highlights of the day was the special activity that combined literacy with environmental care: creating a butterfly house. With the help of the facilitators and teachers, the children worked in small groups to build and decorate beautiful butterfly habitats. These houses were designed to help support butterfly populations in the area. The children learned how even small actions can make a big difference for local wildlife, and many are now inspired to care more deeply about the environment.

To make the day even more special, each child got to choose a book to take home — completely free. Watching the children carefully select their books, whether fiction, adventure, mystery, or fantasy, was heart-warming. Their smiles said it all: they felt seen, empowered, and excited to read.

The combination of environmental engagement and literacy development made this event a perfect fit for our school’s values. We are proud of our Year 4 children for their creativity, curiosity, and care for their community.

A big thank you to the National Literacy Trust and the Young Readers Programme and especially Miss Heard for making this day possible — and for helping us grow both readers and butterflies!
