Two weeks ago our year six students were researching facts about Charles Darwin. We learned about his contributions to the scientific world and how he improved our understanding of natural selection, animal adaptations and the theory of evolution.
After discussing Darwin’s ideas, the year six class conducted an experiment that simulated how certain birds adapted to the Galapagos Islands. They used a variety of items such as cups, spoons, clothing pins and scissors to determine how effective each item could be when collecting objects in a ceramic bowl.
After recording the number of objects collected, our children then deciphered the information to identify the characteristics that would help a bird find food.
