This week in Science, Year 2 have been busy bending, squashing, stretching, and twisting their way through a brilliant investigation all about materials!
We discovered that there are four main ways we can change the shape of some materials and we had lots of fun putting that to the test. From twisting bottles to squashing putty, we explored how different materials behave when we try to change their shape. We quickly noticed that not all materials like to be changed, like a hard plastic block which we realised is perfect for Lego, but not much good for stretching!
We were especially fascinated by materials like elastic bands that spring back to their original shape.
Our young scientists carefully tested materials, recorded what they observed and then shared their findings with their table groups. They did a fantastic job evaluating which materials could be changed and which stayed the same and write this up in their Science books.
This fun, hands-on lesson built on our previous learning about natural and human-made materials and has set us up perfectly for our next big science adventure: finding out which materials are strong, absorbent or waterproof!
Why not have a look around your home; can you find things you can bend, squash, stretch or twist? What other properties do they have?
