In Maths this week, Year 1 have been developing their understanding of doubling. The children explored what it means to double a number by rolling a dice and finding double the amount shown. This practical activity helped them to recognise that doubling involves making two equal groups.

To support children in visualising their thinking, they used a ladybird map to represent the two equal parts. This concrete resource encouraged careful counting, one-to-one correspondence, and provided opportunities for children to check that both groups were the same.

Once the children had identified the double, they recorded their learning by writing the corresponding number sentence in their books (for example, 3 + 3 = 6). This helped to make clear links between practical activities and written mathematical representations.

The children showed increasing confidence in using mathematical vocabulary such as double, equal and altogether, and many were able to explain their reasoning clearly.
