This week, the children have loved reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar—a story that’s always a big hit in Reception!
To go with the story, we set up a fun painting activity where the children created their own caterpillars using foam circles and paint. They chose their own colours and were encouraged to make simple repeating patterns, like red-green-red-green (ABAB) or red-green-green-red (ABBA).
Not only did this activity let the children enjoy painting, it also helped them learn about patterns, which is an important part of early maths learning. Spotting and creating patterns helps children with problem solving and understanding how things work in order.
The children were really proud of their colourful caterpillars—and we were too!
