On Friday, we marked British Values Day with a range of exciting activities that helped the children explore important ideas in a meaningful and age-appropriate way. In Reception, our focus was the value of Democracy, which we explored through the theme of fair and not fair.
To help us understand this idea, we shared two brilliant stories: Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell and This Is Our House by Michael Rosen. These books sparked thoughtful discussions about fairness, taking turns, sharing, and listening to others — all important ideas that help us understand how democracy works in our everyday lives. The children were encouraged to reflect on how rules and decisions can affect others, and how everyone’s voice matters.
Throughout the day, we took part in a variety of activities linked to British Values and the United Kingdom. The children particularly enjoyed colouring in and decorating their own Union Jack flags, which they proudly waved during our discussions and celebrations.
It was a joyful and thoughtful day full of rich conversations, creative work and plenty of pride in being part of our class community — and our country too!
