This term in DT, Year 4 brought history to life by baking delicious egg custard tarts inspired by the Romans! As part of their topic on Ancient Rome, the children explored how the Romans were among the first to combine milk, eggs, and honey to make custard.
After learning about Roman cooking methods, the class used modern ingredients to recreate this ancient treat. They mixed eggs, warm milk, and honey, added a sprinkle of nutmeg (just like the Romans might have used), and baked their custards in pastry cases.
The activity combined history, food technology, and science—teaching children about chemical changes in cooking while reinforcing their historical knowledge. Best of all, the tarts were a huge hit and tasted amazing!
It was a hands-on, sensory experience that helped make Roman life feel real—and tasty! Well done, Year 4 chefs!
