Year 2 has been full of creativity and reflection this term! We began by admiring and analysing the incredible art we created last term. Inspired by the work of the amazing Eric Carle, the children looked closely at their mixed-media collages and thought about how they used colour, texture and different techniques.
Using only primary colours, they created secondary colours to bring their ideas to life; purple birds, green plants and bright orange fish! We explored texture through leaf rubbings, stamps and different ways of using paintbrushes; focusing on themes of colour, media and land and sea. The children evaluated their own work as well as that of their peers, reflecting on what worked well and what they might try differently next time. This process helped them gain a greater appreciation for the job of an illustrator and develop a deeper connection to Eric Carle’s books.
Music in Year 2 has also kicked off; literally! We’ve been moving to the vibrant rhythms of South African music, learning a dance routine focused on counts of eight and keeping in time with the beat. The children also had fun using claves which followed the beat, building both their musical timing and coordination.
