This week in Nursery, we have come to the conclusion of our unit of learning”People Who Help Us”,with a special focus on the police. The children have been incredibly enthusiastic as we explored the role of the police in keeping us safe and helping others in our community.

Our role play area turned into a busy police station! (There was a jail in there too). The children enjoyed dressing up in police uniforms, writing “incident reports,” using walkie-talkies and making handcuffs. Through play, they learned how the police help keep people safe, solve problems, and work with other emergency services.

Emergency Vehicles from the Past
We looked at pictures and videos of police cars, ambulances, and fire engines from the past, and the children were fascinated by how different they looked and sounded. We compared the sirens, colours, and equipment to what we see today. This led to some great discussions about how things change over time to help people even more!

Telephones Then and Now
The children explored old-fashioned telephones and compared them to the ones we use today. We practised using toy phones and learned how to dial 999 in an emergency. The children now understand the importance if knowing their first and last name and their address.

Today we got really excited as we had a surprise visit from a real police officer, who explained all about the gear he was wearing and his role in our community.
