Welcome back to Year 6! This is an exciting and important year as we prepare for SATs in May and look forward to our School Journey in March. Our aim is for every child to feel happy, motivated, and ready to achieve their very best. The Year 6 team—Mr. Dunning, supported by Mrs. Alexander and Mr. Vogel, with Mrs. Jayes leading interventions and Thursday afternoon lessons—are here to support the children every step of the way.
English
We’ll begin the term with Goodnight Mister Tom, exploring the experiences of evacuees during the Second World War. Our writing will include character descriptions, poetry, and narrative pieces linked to the novel. Later in the term, we’ll move on to writing horror stories, which will tie in with DT lessons where we’ll design and create spooky set designs to bring our stories to life.
Maths
This term, we’ll focus on number and place value, including rounding, before moving on to the four operations. Children will develop fluency and confidence with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including both short and long methods, alongside problem-solving tasks.
History
Our History topic explores the Second World War and life in the UK during this period. We’ll start by studying the geography of Europe and the events leading to the outbreak of war. Then, we’ll learn about evacuees, rationing, air raid shelters, and the role of propaganda. We’ll also study the contributions of people from South Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, the discrimination they faced, and later, the Holocaust and how the war ended.
Science
Our Science topic is Living Things and Their Habitats. We’ll learn how living things are classified, exploring the work of Aristotle and Linnaeus, and investigate micro-organisms through hands-on experiments on mould and decay.
Religious Education (RE)
Our RE unit this term is Life and Death. We’ll explore key milestones in a person’s life, such as baptisms, marriages, and funerals, and reflect on their significance in different faiths and cultures.
Homework and Reading
Homework will be set every Friday and is due back by Wednesday. We expect children to read at home for at least 20 minutes daily—an essential habit for success this year.
