Year 4 stepped back in time this week with a fantastic visit to the Ragged School Museum! We explored the home of a poor Victorian family and enjoyed some brilliant role play, from washing clothes by hand to emptying a chamber pot, known as a ‘guzunder’ because it ‘goes under’ the bed!
We then headed downstairs to meet the rather strict Mrs Perkins, our Victorian schoolteacher! The children experienced life in a Victorian classroom and discovered what education was like for poorer children attending the free schools established by Dr Barnardo.
Although school life was certainly strict, the children began to appreciate just how much the opportunity to learn would have meant to children who might otherwise have gone without.
A wonderful day of hands-on history that really brought our Victorian learning to life!
