On Tuesday, we visited the Natural History Museum for an exciting day of exploration and discovery linked to our learning about minibeasts. For many of us, this was our very first time visiting the museum and we could not believe how huge and exciting it was! From giant dinosaur skeletons hanging above us to fascinating creatures and exhibits around every corner, there was so much to see and talk about.

As we explored the museum, we stepped into a fascinating world of dinosaurs, linking back to our previous learning in class. We were amazed by the enormous dinosaur skeletons and loved comparing their size to our own bodies. Some of us stretched our arms out wide to imagine just how big the dinosaurs really were! We also revisited our learning about carnivores and herbivores, using clues such as sharp teeth and body size to help us discuss what different dinosaurs may have eaten.

Our main focus for the trip, however, was our minibeast workshop with Andy, the minibeast expert. We learnt how to safely search for and observe minibeasts within a garden habitat and were incredibly excited to become real-life minibeast explorers! Armed with magnifying glasses and lots of curiosity, we carefully searched through natural areas looking for tiny creatures hiding beneath logs, leaves and plants.

Working with our partners, we identified a range of minibeasts and shared our discoveries with one another. We spotted different creatures, compared similarities and differences and used our observation skills brilliantly throughout the session. There were lots of squeals of excitement when we discovered wriggling creatures hiding in unexpected places!

Throughout the day, we asked thoughtful questions, shared our ideas confidently and developed our understanding of the natural world through real-life experiences. We had such a fantastic day learning together and returned to school feeling inspired, curious and full of excitement about minibeasts!
