Year 1 designed and made their own cup-and-ball toy as part of our History learning about toys from the past. This activity built on our previous learning about how toys have changed over time and what children played with in the Victorian era, making links to materials, design and purpose. Children explored the features of traditional toys, discussed why they were made the way they were, and compared them to toys they play with today. Through making their own toy, pupils developed their understanding of historical continuity and change, while also applying skills such as following instructions, problem-solving and evaluating their finished product. The lesson provided a hands-on, engaging way for children to deepen their historical understanding and talk confidently about the past.
