This week in English, Year 1 have been on an exciting adventure inspired by the story How to Find Gold. The children explored the text closely, focusing on how instructions are used to guide a reader step by step. They discussed what it takes to successfully “find gold” and identified the key features of instructional writing.
Year 1 worked hard to develop their understanding of command verbs and time connectives, such as first, next and finally. The children applied these skills by writing their own instructions and confidently presenting them to the class, supporting the development of their oracy skills through clear speaking and attentive listening. To deepen their understanding, the children also created their own treasure maps, carefully thinking about the journey and the steps needed to reach the gold. Next week, Year 1 will use their maps to write a full set of instructions on how to find gold, building on the skills they have practised this week.
