This week in Nursery, we explored the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood—with a healthy twist! Instead of filling her basket with sweets and treats, our Red Riding Hood wanted to take nutritious food to Grandma to help her feel better.
As part of our learning, the children worked together to sort different types of food into two groups: Healthy and Unhealthy. We used pictures, real food packaging, and story prompts to help us decide which items would give Red Riding Hood and Grandma energy, and which ones were better saved for an occasional treat.
This activity helped develop early decision-making and supported our understanding of well-being and healthy lifestyles.
After sorting the food, the children chose their favourite healthy items and created their own drawings for Red Riding Hood’s basket. They used felt tips to represent fruit and vegetables.
This gave wonderful meaning to their mark making, as each child talked about what they were drawing and why it was a good choice for Grandma. Their pictures showed growing control, creativity, and confidence in early writing skills.
