On Monday, Year 6 travelled to Hampstead Heath to take part in a mapmaking and orienteering session. During the first half of the day, we learnt about how maps can represent human and physical features in different ways. For example, colours can show land use, signs can be used for different places (eg. a coffee cup for a cafe), and contour lines can be used to show elevation. We made our own maps, designing a dream island. We used contour lines and signs within a key to show different landmarks on our islands.

Following our session learning about maps, we learnt how to use the 8 points of a compass as well as grid references to locate places and orienteering markers on both a map and in the real world. We then used our map skills to find a number of different orienteering markers on Hampstead Heath—getting quite muddy in the process!
