Year 1 have begun their exciting Design and Technology project on castle structures. To start our learning, children explored a range of castles, identified their key features and carefully labelled them. They then produced detailed sketches to help develop their early design ideas.

This learning has been closely linked to our Mathematics curriculum, where we have been focusing on 2D shapes. Year 1 applied their mathematical understanding by using lolly sticks to create a 2D model of a castle, selecting and arranging shapes to represent features such as towers, walls and battlements. This cross-curricular approach has supported Year 1 in making meaningful connections between subjects, developing both their vocabulary and their problem-solving skills.

Next, we will build on this foundation by exploring 3D structures, preparing children to design and make their own model castles using a range of materials and joining techniques.
