This week in Nursery, we have been very busy developing our early reading and writing skills, as well as exploring the changing winter weather!

Writing: Learning to Hold a Pencil Correctly

We have begun our writing journey by learning how to hold a pencil using the “Drop it, Pinch it, Flick it” method.
Children practised this every day, helping them build confidence and strengthen their fine-motor skills.

Drop it – place the pencil on the table.
Pinch it – use thumb and finger to pick it up near the tip.
Flick it – flip it back into the correct writing position.
The children have been so proud of themselves as they learn the foundations of good writing!

Reading: Early Sounds & Book Handling

In reading, we continued practising important pre-reading skills:

Holding books the right way up
Turning pages one at a time
Looking at pictures and talking about characters
Listening carefully during story time
We are encouraging children to use vocabulary from familiar stories and to talk about they can see.

Winter Weather Exploration: Ice Investigators!

With the weather becoming much colder, our outdoor tuff tray froze overnight—which created wonderful learning opportunities!

The children discovered five speckled frogs trapped inside the ice. They experimented with ways to release them, using warm water, tools, and their hands. Through this activity, we explored:

What happens when water turns to ice
How ice melts back into water
New vocabulary such as freeze, melt, solid, liquid
The children were fascinated and worked together to free the frogs!
