Today, the Reception children joined the rest of the school in celebrating Puzzle Day — a special day dedicated to problem-solving, teamwork and having fun while thinking in new and creative ways.
In the afternoon, we were lucky enough to take part in a hands-on workshop led by Izzy, who brought along a selection of exciting puzzles for us to solve. The first challenge was one the children were already familiar with: Perilous Penguins! This is a game we’ve played before in class, and it was lovely to see the children drawing on their past experiences to work together and plan their moves carefully.
The second puzzle was much trickier! The children were given a large jigsaw to complete — but with a twist. Some pieces were unusually shaped: long and thin, or short and wide, which made it more of a challenge. It was wonderful to watch the children discussing where pieces might go, taking turns, and helping each other figure it out.
To finish off, the children had some time for free play using large pieces of piping. This open-ended activity sparked lots of imagination and gave the children the chance to experiment with construction, balance and design.
It was a brilliant afternoon full of thinking, teamwork and laughter. The children were fully engaged, and it was clear just how much they enjoyed the challenge of solving each puzzle together. Well done, Reception!
