This week, Year 2 have been learning about a very brave woman from British history – Edith Cavell. Although it was a serious topic, the children showed great maturity and curiosity as they discovered her inspiring story.

We found out that Edith Cavell was a British nurse who worked in Belgium during World War One. She cared for injured soldiers from both sides of the war ; something that was very brave, selfless and kind.

To help us understand more, we acted out a short play about the end of Edith’s life- based in the Red Cross Hospital. Children had a turn to play different parts and we repeated the play a few times to really get into role. The children loved using drama to bring the story to life, and it helped us think deeply about the choices Edith made.

Afterwards, we had a thoughtful class discussion about whether it was fair that Edith was punished for helping others. The children shared lots of different opinions and listened respectfully to each other’s ideas. They then wrote about their thoughts in their books.

I was so proud of how mature and reflective the Year 2s were. They showed they are more than ready to explore important topics like this and their thoughtful responses were truly impressive. Well done, Year 2!
