This week in Maths, Year 4 have been exploring the exciting world of symmetry! The children have been learning how to identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes, both regular and irregular. Using mirrors, paper folding, and drawing techniques, they discovered which shapes could be folded evenly and which couldn’t.

They also created beautiful symmetrical patterns by completing the other half of shapes and pictures, paying close attention to size, position, and detail. It was a great way to blend art with maths and really sharpen their observation skills!

The class especially enjoyed a fun activity where they designed their own symmetrical monsters—each side perfectly mirrored. It’s been a week full of creativity, focus, and hands-on learning.

This week, Year 4 have been combining their English, Geography, and Art skills to become young cartographers! As part of their creative writing unit, the children have been designing their own imaginative maps to inspire stories set in fictional lands.

They began by looking at real-world maps, exploring how physical features like mountains, rivers, forests, and cities are represented. Using this knowledge, they carefully planned their own fantasy worlds, thinking about where key landmarks should go and how their placement might influence their story plots.

In Art, they added colour, detail, and texture to bring their maps to life, using symbols and compass roses to give them a professional touch. The children loved naming their locations and inventing backstories for each area. This cross-curricular project has sparked amazing creativity and helped deepen their understanding of map-making and storytelling. We can’t wait to read the adventures that unfold in these new lands!
