Welcome to Year 2! The children are settling in beautifully and made a fantastic start to the new academic year. This half-term promises to be an exciting one, filled with creativity, curiosity and opportunities to develop confidence and independence.
In English, we will explore Man on the Moon and Traction Man, using these engaging texts to inspire reading, discussion and writing. During our daily phonics and reading-practice sessions, the children will revisit Phase 5 sounds and spelling patterns to strengthen fluency and confidence. Weekly homework will provide valuable opportunities to consolidate this learning at home.
In maths, we will deepen our understanding of place value to 100 before developing our addition and subtraction skills through practical activities and word problems. We will also investigate the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
Our history learning will transport us back to 1666 as we investigate the Great Fire of London and develop an understanding of significant events from the past. In art, the children will experiment with mixed media and explore the work of Eric Carle and John Dyer before creating colourful collages and a dramatic burning street scene inspired by the Great Fire of London.
In music, we will enjoy singing songs in different languages and learn to use our voices creatively and expressively. Our PE lessons will focus on gymnastics, helping the children to develop their balance, coordination and control.
In RE, we will explore the question, “Why did Jesus teach the Lord’s Prayer as the way to pray?” In PSHE, we will focus on relationships and consider what it means to be a kind and supportive friend.
During computing lessons, the children will learn how to publish their work using Microsoft Word, including changing fonts and inserting pictures. They will also develop their understanding of online safety and learn how to recognise and respond appropriately to safety alerts.
We are looking forward to a busy, inspiring and enjoyable half-term in Year 2, and we cannot wait to see the children’s confidence, creativity and love of learning continue to grow!
