The Rainbow Milk Experiment

This week’s Science Experiment focused on the crazy colours and patterns that are created when washing up liquid comes into contact with milk.

Children were first shown the equipment that was needed for the experiment and then the instructions they would have to follow. After hearing this, they made predictions about what would happen once the cotton buds and the washing-up liquid entered the milk.

The children then performed the experiment and recorded their observations.

The resulting colours and patterns occur because the washing-up liquid weakens the chemical bonds between the fats, proteins, and the rest of the milk. The soap then attaches to the fat in the milk and this causes the cool patterns that the children saw!

Why not try this experiment at home? You only need four ingredients!
