We have been reading the book ‘The Great Kapok Tree’, which deals with the dilemma faced by a man about to cut down a huge tree in the Amazon Rainforest. He is spoken to by the animals, who try to persuade him not to cut down the tree. He has to decide whether to destroy the habitat of the animals or face the consequences of not cutting the tree and the impact that could have on himself and his family. We took part in a ‘Conscience Alley’ and tried to give persuasive arguments on whether or not the tree should be cut down.
After our dilemma we wrote and acted out our own playscripts in which the man went back to his boss and had to explain why he chose not to cut down the tree.
