This week in Science, Year 5 started learning about how to separate mixtures using the sieving technique. We looked at different sized sieves and colanders and discussed which materials could be separated using each one and why. We then created a mixture of flour, rice and dried kidney beans, the children then discussed the sizes of each of them and though about which sieve or colander could be used to separate each one. We wrote our hypotheses and predictions in our science books and then tested different methods. Eventually, we managed to separate our mixture using a sieve and a colander!
