In Year 1 this week, we have begun reading the story ‘The Snail and the Whale’. It is a beautiful tale of an unlikely friendship, where the characters embark on a tour of the world and are involved in a heroic rescue. One of the main characters is a snail and so we decided to have a go at observing snails and their shells. The children noticed their shells featured a spiral pattern.
I then introduced the class to the famous abstract artist, Wassily Kandinsky. We looked at one of his most famous pieces of artwork where circles were used and various colours. It reminded the children of the spiral shape observed on the snails. The children had a go at creating their own Kandinsky inspired snails. Take a look below!
