This week, the Year 5s held a debate in class. In our book, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’, the character Ahmet has travelled from Syria to escape the war. He has lost his family along the way and with the news that our country’s borders will close in a matter of days, he faces a race against time to find them again.
The class debated whether or not Ahmet’s friends should intervene to help Ahmet or if they should follow their teacher’s advice and let the the adults solve the problem.
We had some excellent arguments, with our judges finding it difficult to decide which side were more persuasive. The class used powerful adjectives, rhetorical questions and emotive language to try to convince others of their argument and debated with passion and vigour!
